"As seen in Publisher's Weekly"

For San Diego Book Review

It is pretty much a guarantee that this review will contain more words than the book being reviewed. So settle back with a thermos of coffee and enjoy the next hundred thousand words or so as we look intensely at The Legend of Bob Wire. This provocative study of the darkest side of human -

No no no, it's a children's book! I am always delighted when an author or a publicist asks me to look at a book for very young readers for two very good reasons: One, I enjoy reading them; and two, we need good children's books to make sure we eventually have a stock of adult readers.

What I like about Sam Skinner's book, itself a tongue-in-cheek rendering of the history and geography of Texas, is that it's the sort of book that will allow the reader to expand on the topic. I very much think that this is a bedtime story book, read by a parent to the washed and jammied child. There will be questions asked: Where is Odessa? What makes an oil well explode? What's a hurricane? All of these will need to activities the following day. And that's what a terrific children's book does.
